Pencil Skirt Refashion

Today I'm showing you how easy it is to take a basic pencil skirt from "too large" to "fits-like-a-glove perfection" in just a few steps. Okay so it says 7 steps, but really one is about buying it and two of those are trying it on. I know you can handle this one!

The key is finding the right skirt for the transformation! Be on the look out for good materials, design, and construction. I loved everything about this China Blue skirt the moment I saw it, and with a little love it becomes like new again! The only thing I wish I could have figured out was how to save the original pockets. Maybe someone can help me with that!

Step 1: Hop on over to your local thrift store and find a great pencil skirt, but don't worry if it's too big! ***This tutorial works best for either back-centered zippers or stretchy pencil skirts.

Step 2: Go home and slip that baby on inside out!

Step 3: Pin the waist on each side, keeping the zipper centered in the back. Get these pinned just right for your desired fit (high waist, hip hugging, etc.).

Step 4: After that waist is just right, you can just pin down your sides, alternating pinning from the left side to the right to ensure the most even fit.

Step 5: Check for bumps or folds in the fabric before you start sewing, and you wont have to worry about unpicking.

Step 6: Sew up the pinned sides and zig zag or serge the edges. ***Make sure to match the waist band and the hems as exactly as you can. Alternately, you can unpick the hem and re-hem after you sew the sides. I was just careful to line them up exactly so it wouldn't be noticeable.

Step 7: Try it on again and see how it fits like a glove now!

Now, don't waste another minute! Head over to your local thrift store and start refashioning... I hope you'll share what you find and create with me: #refashionave
