Heart Sweatshirt Tutorial (refashion)

Hey everyone! This is my first post and I thought I'd skip the whole introduction yada-yada and jump right in with a quick tutorial! If you are interested in some background about my blog go here! And while your at it, check out my Etsy Shop too!

A few weeks ago I helped get a group of ladies together from church to do a clothing swap. It turned out really great; we learned a little about couponing and then did some shopping... I mean swapping. Anyway I found the most plain red sweatshirt you ever did see, and I was in love! I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it. Two weeks later and I've finally gotten it done... just in time for Valentine's Day!

Don't you just love the ombré look? It accidentally happened, so lucky!

Here's what you need:

  • Some free time without the baby!
  • Plain Sweatshirt or Shirt
  • Freezer paper
  • Iron
  • Fabric Paint or Ink (I used speedball screen printing ink)
  • Sponge brush or screen printing kit
  • Extra fine glitter (optional)

1. Make a stencil. 2. Measure and Iron into place. 3. Ready to be painted. 4. Choose ink/paint. 5. Mix colors to make desired color. 6. Paint (and sprinkle with glitter if desired).

Steps not shown:

7. Dry for a few hours
8. Iron to set paint (use an old pillowcase to cover then iron on highest setting the clothing allows)
9. Dry over night
10. Wash and dry in machine at normal settings.
11. Wear!

Okay, so I must confess, though I've done lots of freezer paper stenciling, this one didn't turn out as planned. I was going for a matte finish and some of the ink and glitter came off in the wash. I think it was the thickness of the material, so if I were to do it again I would have left the stencil on, let it dry over night and give it another coat of ink/paint. Anyway it came out more of a worn ombré look and I'm really loving it, so all's well that ends well!

Comfortable enough for a lazy Saturday?
