I had been hoping to do this project for a couple years. Finally, I told my husband, this is what I want for my birthday: the money and baby-free time to complete a headboard for us. He gave me just that. Thanks hun!
I'm going to give you links to great tutorials and materials, plus some basic instructions and tips of my own.

- Pegboard - Lowes, I had them cut it down to 30" x 60" for my queen size bed. They will do two straight cuts for free!
- Staple Gun - I have a pretty basic manual staple gun similar to this one from Lowes and it worked well. Find staples appropriate for you staple gun.
- Upholstery Fabric - Velvet, Twill, and Fabric.com in general has a huge selection with free returns! I used THIS velvet fabric.
- Button Kits - Joann's, Hancock Fabric
Instructions and Tips:
- This collage should give an idea of the basic procedures.
- Once you finish tightening all of your buttons, you will need to staple the fabric tightly to the back.
- Tip 1: Keep fabric tight between buttons so you don't have any poofy air pockets in the diamonds.
- Tip 2: Using a couple chairs or saw horses to hold the headboard really helps when you're working from both sides.
- Tip 3: For a finishing touch, when stapling the fabric to the back, fold the fabric under just a bit then staple it on. This way you don't see any raw edges.
- Tip 4: This is only a preference, but I would consider using smaller buttons and/or 3" foam to make the tufts deeper. I will do this if I make another one.
- Tip 5: This is a MUST!!! Find a 50% OFF coupon from Joann's before buying your foam. The stuff is spendy!
Hoorah, I finished the Pinterest Challenge! What do you think? I also made the euro sham pictured, so you may see that pop up in a post soon!

So the washer goes on the backside ?
ReplyDeleteYes! I'm glad you asked this, because I realized that I didn't have a great picture of this.
DeleteInstead of using upholstery thread I thought it would be easier to use skinny but long zip ties and then by zipping them shut it would hold the buttons in place really tightly. Unfortunately, the holes in a pegboard are just a little too big so the zip tie goes right through it.
That's where the washer comes in, you just slip the zip tie through the washer then put the zip tie through the back of the headboard. The washer will hold it in place so that it can't go all the way through the hole. Then, after you slip the button on the front, you will thread the zip tie back down the hole and thru the washer again and zip it tight.
Hope this was more clear! I really don't like making my posts too wordy for fear of people getting overwhelmed or bored, so sometimes I think details slip. :)
