DIY Magazine Rack Tutorial

Today I felt like sharing a little project that I did last year before I started this blog. I didn't take pictures of it during the stages but I think it's pretty easy to explain.

I found this wire basket at the local thrift store a couple years ago and loved it because it fit so nicely on the bottom shelf of our bookshelf. I used it to hold magazines and books but it wasn't very easy to find what I was looking for. Basically, it didn't serve its purpose well.

While surfing pinterest, I came across the idea to string wire across a wooden crate to make a magazine rack and I thought the idea would translate nicely to this wire basket. We happened to have some 16 gauge wire on hand, so I tackled it that evening. It turned out as good or better than I had hoped and it keeps the magazines so much tidier!

Click HERE for the wood crate idea (sorry it's a terrible pinterest image).

Materials:
  • Steel wire (I used 16 gauge because that's what I had on hand, but you could use a little bit smaller)
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Wire basket or wooden crate (make sure it's deep enough to hold magazines)

Steps:
  1. Determine how many magazine slots you want.
  2. Cut that number of strips of wire to the desired length of the basket plus 2 inches.
  3. Using the needle-nose pliers, twist the ends of the wire around the basket (do this on both sides of the basket and repeat for each wire).

There you have it! Now, fill it with magazines and give it a home near your favorite reading spot!

Have I ever mentioned my love for Audrey Hepburn?

Slipped a couple of my favorite decor books/catalogs in the back!

Now, I have homework for all of you!

I've seen plenty of wire baskets exactly like this one at my local thrift store, but I'm unsure what they were originally used for. I've seen similar baskets online being called vintage clothes bins, but I'm still unsure. So I'm asking all of you to help me find out what it was originally! That way, I can add a name to it for this tutorial and you can search for them online much easier.

Hope you can help me out! And feel free to send your question or comments my way!
