Recap of Beginner Sewing Class

Hello everyone! I'm just in an extra cheerful mood today, and I can tell you that it most definitely has something to do with this weekend's General Conference. It was an uplifting experience no short of personal reminders that I can be better, work harder, and take better care of my family, while also reminding me of my worth, talents, abilities, and especially blessings.

Was that too long of a sentence? I told you I'm in a good mood. Anything goes!

It's been almost two weeks now, since I taught my Beginner Sewing Class: Simple Maxi Skirt, so I guess I better get to the recap pronto, before I forget some of the details!

But first, the pictures.

This is the TUTORIAL that the class was designed around.

Getting ready for the class!

Setting everything up!

Samples of different projects I've done.

Nearly finished products! They still needed to hem the skirts, but one had to leave so we took this quick pic!

Possibly the greatest thing about teaching a sewing class was that I was able to combine three things I love to do: teach, sew, and socialize!

I had a fun time creating a *lesson plan that I thought would bring the most to the students and me. I guess all those lesson plans I've had to create in school paid off! Starting with a goal and a main project, I was able to fill in the rest with the proper steps for teaching basic sewing skills and the steps for making the skirt.

But all is fun on paper or in your head right? Executing it can be much different, especially for you first sewing class ever. But with all that said, I felt it went well. I guess you'll have to ask these awesome gals what they thought!

There were some things I learned that will make a second class even better. Here are a few changes I think I will make:

  • 3 days of class instead of 2 since we ran short on time with this class.
  • Have the students bring their own or be responsible for finding their own sewing machines.
  • Maybe try to find a better location. Though this wasn't horrible, there could have been more open space with fewer crowded tables and chairs.
  • Have the students find their own material, or at the very least have an earlier deadline for me to order the fabric. One of the gals had me order some fabric, but unfortunately there were some delays and the fabric arrived one day too late. I can't tell you how frustrated I was with the fabric & shipping company, but the fact is you can't guarantee these things.

Let's talk about how awesome these ladies were though! They came to class day one, intimidated just looking at a sewing machine, but by the end, they had their machines humming beautifully all by themselves! On day two they all came back telling me how they bragged to the husbands about their straight lines, zigzags, and handiwork. Well that just made this teacher proud, and even more proud as they worked away on their skirts on day two.

This is an experience that I'm so glad I took the chance to have! There were many times, leading up to this that I thought, "Na, I'm not ready to teach a class, nor do I have the time." But that was just me coming up with excuses.

Sometimes you can't wait, you can only jump right in.
