I've been just aching to finish the ruffled pencil skirt tutorial I mentioned in this post! Inspired by this Anthropologie skirt, I'm really happy with how it turned out and wanted to pass my budget-friendly tutorial along to all of you! It will be such a great addition to your spring or summer sewing to-do list. As always, feel free to email me for any help or answers to any questions!
Without further ado, the tutorial!
Supplies:
- 1-2 Yards of medium/heavy fabric (I used this home decor fabric from Joann's)
- 7" Zipper (I used a contrasting metallic zipper)
- Matching thread
Step 1: Cut out fabric pieces. Make sure to cut 2 mirror image back pieces.
Step 2: Sew two back pieces together.
Step 3: Sew a long loose basting stitch along the top of the ruffle piece. Don't back stitch. Take one set of threads and pull on it to ruffle the fabric to the width of the back.
Step 4: Pin ruffle to the back piece, right sides facing and ruffled edge with the bottom of the back piece.
Folded out it should look like this.
Step 5: Pin the zipper 2 inches down the back, directly over seam of two back pieces.
Step 6: Sew into place.
Step 7: Pick out the seam where the zipper is and check if zipper can unzip well.
Step 8: Sew front and back together.
Step 9: Try it on to check the fit, and mark darts. I did 2 darts in front and 2 darts in back (darts should fit to waist).
Step 10: Sew darts.
Step 11: Double fold your hem 1 inch in length, press and blind hem stitch your hem.
Step 12: Double fold your waist 1 inch in length, press and blind hem stitch your hem.
YOUR DONE! The best part about this skirt is that it looks a lot more complicated than it really is. Then you'll be ready to enjoy this skirt all through the summer!
I miss my sewing projects! I can't wait to try this during the summer! Thanks for linking up!!

Caribbean Sea, that's amazing! I love connecting with people all over the globe!
DeleteHi. This is a lovely pattern, but how do we get a correct size pattern? The one shown is in very small scale.Thank you.
ReplyDeleteIt's more of a tutorial guide and you will have to measure out your own pattern using the sizing information I give above. Or I would also suggest starting with a skirt that you already know fits you like you want, and make a pattern from it. Best sewing wishes!
DeleteHi, I love the skirt with the ruffle in the back only. What a surprise. Using home décor fabric great!
ReplyDeleteThanks, I'm glad you liked it! I hope you try making one for yourself!!!
DeleteHi, I don't know if you're still responding to comments, but what were your seam allowances, and how large were your darts? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteSorry this is a month later. I used the standard 5/8th inch seam allowance. As for the dart, the front were 2 1/2 inches long and tapered from 1 inch at the top to 0 inches at 2 1/2 long. The back darts were longer at 4 inches, and tapered from 2 inches to 0 inches (hope that even makes sense?!). Happy sewing!
DeleteI just finished this skirt but I sew an invisible zipper, add two pockets, and a waist band. Extra work but looks great. Thanks for the pattern.
ReplyDeleteHow do I get the pattern?
ReplyDeleteLove the skirt. I have been looking for just the right back option. Pulling from old patterns and trying to make one that feels right. This is a nice addition. Love your blog!
